HALLWAY.

Everson fights back tears.

As Cizik approaches him.

EVERSON: What was the crime, Max? Hmm?

CIZIK: Crime?

EVERSON: The company’s not been doing great. I know that. But we were surviving. Inching toward the kind of change we need to be making. And now? Tresler’s in there talking about selling my father’s life’s work to raise the money for me to buy back the business my grandfather started in the first place. We’re going backward, Max. What did I do wrong?

CIZIK: Nothing, Tom. There’s no crime.

EVERSON: Is this the future? Is this what we have to look forward to? Getting squeezed from every side for every last penny?

CIZIK: I hope not.

Pause.

EVERSON: Do you know Allegheny?

CIZIK: I was on a team that visited your father at the house in Pennsylvania twenty years ago. But we didn’t spend more than a night there.

EVERSON: The town might as well be named Everson. Everson Street. Everson Avenue. Everson Heights. Everson Public Library. Everson High School. I mean it goes on and on. Three generations. Three generations that our family has lived off the labor of those people. They made us. They made us. Yeah, we’ve given back. But it was just the order of things.

CIZIK: You’re a good man, Tom.

EVERSON: It’s not about being good. It’s about understanding who we are. It’s not just a financial decision. I mean it is, but not just for shareholders. Shareholders are not more important to the company than the people who made it. (Shifting, a sigh) I must sound like a goddamn moron…

CIZIK: Of course not.

EVERSON: Even if you thought I did, you wouldn’t tell me. (Beat) You trust this guy Tresler?

CIZIK: He’s a straight shooter.

EVERSON: He likes to hear himself talk. Can he win this?

CIZIK: He will fight.

EVERSON: What’s in it for him?

CIZIK: Two and a half percent of the total deal. At these numbers? Close to forty million dollars. And a chance to be the good guy.

Pause.

EVERSON: Okay. Let’s do it.
